Navigating the Chain of Command in a Creative Team

Embarking on a journey in the fashion industry can be both exciting and overwhelming. Understanding the hierarchy and roles within a creative team is crucial for a smooth and successful collaboration. Here’s a breakdown of the chain of command typically found on set during a fashion shoot or event:

1. Designer or Brand

At the top of the hierarchy is the designer or brand. They are the visionaries who create the collection or concept. Their vision sets the tone for the entire project, and they often provide initial briefs and guidelines. Everyone on set for a shoot or event should be aware that these eyes are watching........always!

2. Creative Director

The creative director bridges the gap between the designer’s vision and the practical execution of the shoot. They oversee the overall aesthetic, ensuring that every element aligns with the brand’s identity. They collaborate closely with the designer and guide the rest of the creative team. The relationship and conversation between Creative Director and Designer/Brand should not be a line that is crossed by any other member in the creative team. From this point on all other creative talents should report to the Creative Director.

3. Stylist

The stylist brings the designer's vision to life through clothing and accessories. They select outfits, style looks, and ensure that the wardrobe matches the creative direction. The stylist works hand-in-hand with the creative director to maintain consistency and coherence in the visual presentation.

4. Hair and Makeup Artist

Hair and makeup artists are responsible for creating the desired beauty looks that complement the styling and creative direction. They often collaborate with the stylist and creative director to ensure the hair and makeup align with the overall theme and aesthetic of the shoot.

5. Photographer or Videographer

The photographer or videographer captures the vision on film. They work closely with the creative director to understand the desired shots and angles. They also collaborate with the stylist, hair, and makeup artists to ensure every detail is perfect before capturing the images or footage.

Understanding Industry Workflow

The workflow typically follows this order:

  1. Briefing: The designer or brand briefs the creative director on the vision.

  2. Concept Development: The creative director refines the concept and communicates it to the team.

  3. Styling: The stylist selects and prepares the wardrobe.

  4. Prepping Models: Hair and makeup artists prepare the models according to the creative direction.

  5. Shooting: The photographer or videographer captures the visuals, guided by the creative director.

  6. Review and Feedback: The team reviews the shots, makes necessary adjustments, and reshoots if needed.

Tips for Industry Newcomers

  • Be Adaptable: Creative projects often evolve; be ready to adapt to changes.
